Alumni connect through Web site... By Kristina Kregiel, Mon Valley View, June 23, 2005

Losing touch with members of your graduating class is almost inevitable.

Over time, friends are often put on the back burner as college, jobs and family begin to take precedence over high school pals.

And Charleroi High School's class of 2005 may fall into the same situation.

But unlike many area graduates, Charleroi students have a tool available that can prevent them from completely breaking ties with those they grew up with.

And it's all thanks to a 1974 graduate.

Jeane Palfrey, owner of the Web site www.CharleroiPaHsAlumni.org, started the site in 2002 as a "fun and frivolous hobby" in hopes of reuniting members of her 1974 graduating class.

Soon after, though, she realized that she wanted to maintain the site as a source for all Charleroi High School alumni to stay connected.

Within the past three years, Palfrey managed to collect the names of approximately 2,000 of Charleroi's more than 20,000 graduates.

She hopes that as word travels about the Web site, the participation rate will soar to new heights.

Palfrey maintains the Web site out of her state of California home, which she says, does not hinder her progress in receiving new alumni submissions despite living clear across the nation.

"The Web and PC's make a project of this kind extremely easy."

"As a matter of fact, without such technology, CharleroiPaHsAlumni.org would not be possible."

"As I recently said to a fellow classmate, we have not been quite as cut off from each other the past 30 years as we originally thought."

"It has taken the alumni site to show us- me included- how close we have been all along, often geographically, but most especially, spiritually and psychologically."

Palfrey believes the Web site could be a great asset for the school district and the Charleroi community.

"Honestly, I sometimes believe I am considered a bit of an oddity, and consequently, folks just don't know what to make of me or the site," says Palfrey.

But she hasn't let people get her down.

She will continue to spend money out of her own pocket each month on the Web site's development and maintenance.

"I am looking forward to the day a major college or university recognizes the value of the site's ever-growing database and, subsequently, utilizes it as the foundation for a sociological study."

Kristina Kregiel is a staff writer for the Mon Valley View.

Correction: The alumni site has managed to chronicle approximately 2,500 plus former students, not all of whom officially graduated from CHS and CAHS, since its inception in October of 2002.
