Couple has 'wonderful life'... By Chris Buckley, Valley Independent, September 10, 2005

Bill and Joann Hagerty's life has had a "Capraesque" style to it.

Like George and Mary Bailey, in "It's a Wonderful Life," they were high school sweethearts who didn't marry until years after they graduated.

They did not get married until Bill Hagerty - not his brother - returned home from the service. And unlike the likeable characters in the Frank Capra film classic, Bill Hagerty's mother helped bring them together.

Now splitting their time between Omaha and Fort Myers, the past 48 years have truly been "a wonderful life" for the 1951 Charleroi High School graduates.

Bill and Joann Hagerty went to the prom together, but went their separate ways after graduation when he and several classmates, joined the U.S. Navy. Bill Hagerty served during the Korean conflict.

Joann Hagerty got married and later was divorced.

She became bookkeeper at the former First National Bank after high school, and continued to work there until her marriage to Bill Hagerty 1957.

Upon his return from the navy, Bill Hagerty joined a crowd of young men and women who all were close friends. They'd all go to the Charleroi VFW for dances, for example.

Bill Hagerty's mother, Margaret, played a role in the couple becoming a couple.

"He'd come up and visit with my mother, even when I wasn't there," Joann Hagerty recalled of the frequent visits to her house. "Other times, my mother would make dinner for all of us. It was a fun time back then."

Bill Hagerty subsequently attended Washington and Jefferson College and went to work for Westinghouse after they got married.

He then answered a newspaper advertisement and landed a job as a driver at the UPS facility in Monessen.

After the Monessen site closed, he transferred to Toledo.

Initially a driver, he helped to open new UPS facilities as the carrier expanded to Ohio, Iowa and Nebraska.

He retired after 31 years with the company.

The couple has two daughters and a son - Cindy Catherwood, Marcy Hagerty and Ed Hagerty Jr. - who live in Nebraska. Their other daughter, Eileen Irvine, resides in Hudson, Ohio.

The couple now spends the fall and winter months in Florida and returns to Nebraska for the spring and summer.

They plan to attend their 55th high school class reunion in October. They try to make it back home to the Valley once or twice a year. Both still have relatives in the Mid-Mon Valley.
