Fallowfield Township native Leslie Wirtz has been part of major world events for the past 15 years - from the first Gulf War to the current war in Iraq to relief efforts in New Orleans. The 1977 Charleroi Area High School graduate lives in Chicago but she often returns to southwestern Pennsylvania to serve with the Air Force Reserve, as a major with the Pittsburgh-based 911th Airlift Wing, Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron. As chief nurse of her unit, Wirtz has traveled to hot spots around the world. In her most recent mission, she helped to transfer patients from hurricane-battered New Orleans to hospitals elsewhere. "When we got to the New Orleans airport, we walked into what was Terminal D," Wirtz said. "That huge terminal was filled with patients on litters. Many of the patients had never flown on a plane before. So along with taking care of their medical issues we had to deal with the fact that they were afraid to fly." Wirtz and her fellow reserve crew members worked around the clock ferrying injured people to airports throughout the Southwest. It was a different type of mission, because each crew member had volunteered for the duty. The head of the unit merely called the members and said that a need existed. "I feel privileged that I could participate," Wirtz said. "So many people want to help but don't have the means or opportunity. I had both." Wirtz said her "day job" -...she's a nurse consultant with Cardinal Health in Chicago - is understanding when it comes to her reserve duties. Over the years, Wirtz has had opportunities to transfer to other reserve units. However, she has stuck with the Pittsburgh group. "There is something very special about the people from this area," she said of her childhood home. "Maybe it's the work ethic that sticks with you throughout life or maybe the core values that are learned early on, but every member of my squadron exhibits that attitude of doing whatever it takes to get the job done." In addition to reserve assignments, Wirtz visits with family members in the Mon Valley. Her mother, June Kibler, and brother, Kenneth Kibler, still live in Fallowfield Township. Her sister, Susan Grecco, is only a few miles away in Pleasant Hills. When Wirtz became married in 2002, the choice for the location of the wedding was an easy one - ...back in the Mon Valley. "When I thought about the wedding, I knew that it had to be back home and I had to have my childhood pastor, Rev. Francis Blair, do the ceremony," she said. Wirtz said that was fine with her husband, Victor, who grew up in the Midwest. | John Woodward, '77 | Andrea Todora, '74 | James R.
